A few years ago a dozen friends started calling themselves the Maynard Yacht Club after spending many years grilling and partying in a neighborhood near the town's mill pond. We made some hats for ourselves with our logo on them and people kept asking how to join. Not wanting to make money on a neighborhood idea, we decided to make the hats available for a small contribution to the Maynard Library.
There is no physical Yacht Club, we are, however,a real club, a Yacht Club of the
Mind, a Metaphysical Yacht Club, or a Floating Yacht Club. . .

- The club claims to have been established by anarchists in 1871, the year the town of Maynard was established.
- All members are given the title Commodore.
- What the Burgee (pennant) represents: The blue field is for the field of the flag of Maynard, orange and black triangles are for the Maynard Tigers school mascot and sports teams. The martini is self-explanatory and takes the place of most yacht club devices like a star or anchor.
- The club's motto is taken from the Latin "Mare Nostrum" or "Our Sea"; we have updated it to "Stagnum Nostrum", Our Pond.
- In the spring of 2003 the Club joined forces with the Friends of Maynard Public Library by selling lifetime memberships for $15 and giving away Yacht Club hats. To date we have raised over $1600 for the new library building fund.
- MOST OF OUR MEMBERS DON'T KNOW ANYBODY WITH A YACHT AND FEW HAVE BEEN ON ONE.
- Our first annual meeting was held November 8, 2003, some 132 years after the club was founded.
- There may be around 300 Members/Commodores worldwide, including an Australian bartender in Galway, Ireland.
